The Owsley Stanley Foundation and the Allman Brothers Band are pleased to present the latest chapter in Bear’s Sonic Journals: The Allman Brothers Band, Fillmore East, February 1970, available now on CD and audiophile downloads. The CD includes material from three incredible performances early in the Allman Brothers’ career, and the digital downloads provide access to all of Owsley’s Recordings of these shows.
Essential Listening for Allman Brother’s Fans
- These recordings showcase an early incarnation of the band with Duane Allman in full form and featuring the three earliest known live concert recordings of “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”
- The tapes were recorded just one year before the band’s landmark At Fillmore East album from the same venue.
- Long out-of-print, the single-CD set was freshly restored and mastered from the original tapes captured by legendary Grateful Dead soundman, Owsley Stanley, a/k/a Bear, who is known for the purity of his “Sonic Journal” recordings.
- The Deluxe Edition 3-CD set and high-resolution FLAC files for digital download include all of Bear’s recordings from these three historic sets, including never before released material from each performance.
- The CD releases feature all new album art and liner notes, including a series of rare band photos from the Fillmore East in February 1970, original cover artwork (“Electric Mushroom”), and new notes from John Lynskey (Hittin The Note – Fanzine editor in chief) and the Owsley Stanley Foundation.
- These tapes were transferred and restored to the most exacting audiophile standards, utilizing state-of-the-art Plangent Processes techniques to remove subtle timing distortions created by the recording and playback devices.
- The mastering was done by Jeffrey Norman (Mockingbird Mastering), long-time collaborator with the Grateful Dead and Owsley Stanley.

These recordings were not previously released in their entirety because they contain significant gaps, usually due to reel changes in the middle of songs. Bear wanted people to have the option of hearing the shows. So here it is!
In this case, Bear’s complete recordings include previously unreleased material of the Allman Brothers, with Duane in his prime. On each night, you can find something special and rare — even if only in a fragment or a solo.
Whether or not you may be inclined to compare all three of these earliest live versions of Elizabeth Reed, or to study Bear’s placement of microphones each night, or to splice your own version of Mountain Jam to compete with the one Bear and Jeffrey Norman first assembled back in 1996, we thought it important to make it all available with the blessing and support of the Allman Brothers Band.

These Sonic Journals comprise the complete source material for the compilation Allman Brothers Band, Fillmore East February 1970, which included performances from February 11, 13, & 14, 1970. These recordings were not previously released in their entirety and are not now being released in a physical format because they contain significant gaps, usually due to reel changes in the middle of songs. Nonetheless, because we are essentially completists like Bear, if the artists will allow it, our natural inclination is to release every concert in whole, as historically significant and sonically pure artifacts. In this case, the source material includes previously unreleased material of the Allman Brothers with Duane in his prime.
